The colostrum powder works more directly on the growth factors—it may: stimulate cell growth of tissue and skin, help heal tissue, muscle, bone, and cartilage, elevate our mood, burn fat, and build muscle. It may even be used to help promote topical healing.

The powder works in the body differently and may be taken differently. One to two teaspoons should be taken twice a day—no matter when you have eaten. Colostrum powder may be taken directly followed by 8-12 oz. of water. The powder may also be mixed and taken with any liquid or drink (including protein drinks), or food (we have found putting it on top of applesauce, yogurt, or cottage cheese works well), or on an empty stomach. The goal is to have Colostrum absorbed directly in the stomach. The scoop in the jarholds a tablespoon.

Fitness Benefits of Colostrum

By Donald Henderson, M.D., M.P.H.

Athletes have searched for years (sometimes at great risk to their overall well-being) for the mythical "miracle" drug or supplement that will help them enhance their performances. The ideal answer would be something designed by Mother Nature that allows the body to use or boost its own internal powers to help us build energy, muscle and cardiovascular endurance. I believe we may have that answer, and my supposition is strongly supported by both clinical research and anecdotal evidence. It's bovine colostrum.

The fitness effects of colostrum have been proven in many studies worldwide, and were recently documented again in new studies out of Australia which showed the significant fitness gains, including improved stamina and shortened recovery time, for athletes of the national football any cycling teams who took 60 grams of colostrum per day for 8 weeks. (The studies have not yet been published, although the results have received worldwide media attention.)

Lance Kellogg, Natural Bodybuilder

Lance Kellogg used to get sick almost every time after he completed a body building contest. The rigorous training and restricted diet depletes the system and lower immune response.

Since he started taking colostrum, however, he claims he hasn’t been sick once. In fact, he says he’s the only time he’s been sick in the last two years was during a period when he was taking a break from colostrum.

“I’ve found my muscle recovery time has definitely improved with colostrum. It also helps me build lean muscle mass more quickly – especially since I upped my intake to 24g of colostrum per day”, he said.

Lance heard about colostrum when a friend of his used it to clear up his allergies. When another friend told him about the reputed benefits for athletes, he knew he had to try it.

Lance insists that “I’m serious about bodybuilding, but I’m not willing to sacrifice my health for it. That’s why I love colostrum – not only does it help me in my bodybuilding career, but it helps keep me healthy at the same time. I've been around supplements a lot because of my career, and from previously working in a health food store for 5 years. I've never seen anything like colostrum, which has no side effects, even with large dosage."

Fighting Scleroderma
One Woman’s Story

My name is Lurlene. My twin sister and I were the oldest of sixteen children. Fourteen years ago, my identical twin sister died. Shortly after her death, my health began to deteriorate. I developed a congestive heart condition, my entire body became swollen with fluid, and my skin started to thicken and take on a plaster-like texture and appearance. My body was like a hard piece of furniture—with pieces that became brittle and flaked off with the slightest touch. My skin pigmentation was also starting to disappear. I was terrified—I didn't know what was happening to me.

My doctor informed me that I had, acquired an immune disorder that could cause numerous problems. He referred me to many specialists, such as rheumatoIogists and dermatologists, who would conduct multiple tests to diagnose my illness. For three years, I was in and out of many doctors' offices.

Along with the examinations, I experienced chronic and severe pain, swelling, thickening of my skin, rashes and continued loss of pigmentation, I'm an African-American woman, and after being used to having a moderately dark complexion, it felt to me as if I had an extra coating of skin. I felt like a flower that was dying.

I couldn't even move my fingers. They became infected, with open sores. The condition started to affect my throat — I couldn’t swallow and could barely eat.

Finally, I visited a dermatologist who diagnosed my condition as Systemic Sclerosis, or Scleroderma ( a chronic, debilitating illness which affects the immune system and many other systems of the body. The cause of this disorder is unknown, and there is currently no cure.

Ten years ago, when I was first diagnosed, it was explained to me that my skin, blood vessels and vital organs would eventually turn into fibrous tissue. Even though physicians were treating my symptoms with numerous medications, I didn't feel well and I knew something more had to be done quickly.

Through daily prayers and meditations, I was guided by God to meet a total stranger. This person informed me about whole, organically derived vitamins.

After consultation with the provider of these vitamins, I began to take sixty-three pills daily! This went on for about six months. It was a costly therapy, with some positive results, but I didn't have enough money to complete the course of treatment. While pursuing this method of healing, however, a miraculous thing happened one day at the doctor’s office. God directed my husband Clyde to an article about colostrum. He then purchased and ate a colostrum food bar, liked It, and immediately told me he felt that I needed this product. We asked the doctor s opinion, and he agreed. What my husbal:d liked most about colostrum was that it works directly on the immune system and is a completely natural substance. We purchased a bottle of colostrum capsules and within a week, noticed dramatic results.

Within days of starting to take colostrum, the swelling in my hands decreased. Also, my joints and muscles were not as achy and stiff, the elasticity returned to my skin, and my breathing began to return to normal. I said to myself, "This is really working!" For the first time, I could go up and down stairs without the terrible pain I had become used to. I could get in and out of the car and not experience excruciating pain. It was simply amazing -a true Godsend! I couldn't believe what was happening to me. This was a complete turnaround. I was so excited that I began telling everyone I know relatives, friends and my hair styling clients — about colostrums.

As a hair stylist, the ability to move my hands freely is critical — and so is their appearance. After taking colostrum, I felt better, my hands looked better, and I performed better. And I knew my clients were happy for me.  Needless to say, my business improved. I now share my colostrums story with everyone who comes into the salon, and I stock and sell it myself. "Vital Health News" is one of the first things clients notice when entering the shop. Books and tapes on colostrum are on display in a beautiful cabinet.

Taking colostrum is a daily blessing for me. It has rejuvenated me. Today, I am on a daily mission to make more people aware of this miraculous healing substance.

Researcher Study Colostrum Worldwide
Documenting Beneficial Effects

Disease

Paul A. Goldberg, M.P.H., D.C., of The Goldberg Clinic in Marietta, Georgia, is directing a small study focusing on the therapeutic effects of colostrum in adult patients who have chronic inflammatory disease
Chronic inflammatory disease is characterized by the following disorders: rheumatoid disease, inflammatory bowel syndromes such as Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Dr. Goldberg will be focusing on adult patients who have a chronic inflammatory disease state showing little change under standard methods of care, and who experience "significant discomfort" due to the condition.

Study on Athletic Performance

Dr. Jose Antonio, Ph.D., runs the Human Performance Lab at the University .of Nebraska and is the Adjunct Health and Science Editor for Muscle and Fitness magazine. He has recently concluded a study comparing the effects of colostrum to the effects of a placebo in healthy, active men and women, ages 18-35. This study investigated the changes in overall body weight, composition,. muscle endurance and exercise performance of subjects supplementing with colostrum. The results of this study are pending publication in the Journal of Nutrition.

Dr. Antonio has written various articles concerning the benefits of colostrum on athletic performance. His most recent article can be seen in the October 1999

Revisited: Is this compound the mother's milk of sports performance?" This article, like others describes clinical studies that have determined the beneficial effects of colostrum on athletic performance.

Can You Be Sure Of Colostrum Quality?

Unfortunately, not all colostrum is effective. That’s because the proteins that form its immunoglobulins, growth factors, and other bioactive components are fragile and easily damaged by incorrect processing, such as excessive heat. The following are criteria for the source, collection, processing and testing of high-quality colostrum that is likely to retain all its broad-spectrum benefits.

• Source

The quality of the dairy herd is important. Ideally, colostrum should come from pasture-fed herds, are pesticide, hormone and antibiotic free. In particular, the cows should be free from recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBST). When a cow is pasture fed, it is exposed to a wider variety of soil-based bacteria and viruses than a feedlot; therefore, its colostrum has a broad-based ability in transferring immunity to these pathogens humans. Colostrum contains "transfer factor" transfers immunity to these pathogens to those consume the colostrum. Luckily for us humans, transfer factor is 110t species-specific.

Plus, when a cow eats green grass instead of processed feed, it gets all the natural nutrients, enzymes, and beneficial soil-based organisms "designed" to get. This live, raw food means the animal's colostrum is more potent and effective for humans.

Finally, large herds provide a better source colostrum, because they ensure a high level of standardization - meaning that the colostrum is more likely to provide a consistent level of bioactive components across many batches.

• Colostrum should be fresh processed, never frozen
"If colostrum is frozen, a different molecular is created, and the colostrum becomes a rubbery gel. Even after thawing and drying, this substance is not readily water-soluble and is thus very difficult for humans to assimilate, because it doesn't readily disperse in the intestinal tract.

• Colostrum should be collected only  from the first five milkings after the cow’s second birth to assure maximum biological activity.

• The colostrum should be processed at the lowest possible temperatures to protect colostrum’s helpful components from destruction,

Colostrum does need to be pasteurized to make sure that bacterial contamination is not a factor. It is important, however, that this pasteurization be at correct heat levels to avoid damaging its heat-sensitive, bioactive proteins and to avoid denaturing and contaminating the colostrum.

• Testing

Colostrum should be tested by a certified, independent lab for two reasons -(a) to ensure safety, and (b) to ensure efficacy.

Most often, colostrum from New Zealand sources matches the above criteria. New Zealand has the largest pasture-fed herds on the planet, is the only government to develop a licensed standard for colostrum collection and processing for human consumption, and the country s government has very strict regulations in place governing pesticide and antibiotic use in dairy herds. In addition, rBST is not even allowed in New Zealand.

As far as safety is concerned, colostrum should be tested for the presence of antibiotics, pesticides, heavy metals, and disease-causing pathogens.

According to Barry Murphy, a biochemist with 10 years of experience determining the quality of colostrum, the best overall test of colostrum’s effectiveness is its immunoglobin levels. Consumers should look for immunoglobin levels of at least fifteen percent.

The quality of New Zealand colostrum notwithstanding, some U.S. sources are now starting to supply high-quality colostrum that matches the above criteria.

As always, when buying natural dietary supplements, research pays off. Do your homework before deciding which brand of colostrum is right for you!

A Note On Testing Methods
Unfortunately for consumers, not all colostrum testing methods are equally accurate. The RID method, the most common method for testing for immunoglobin levels in colostrum, is notoriously inaccurate.

More accurate methods are HPLC (high performance liquid chromology) of ELISA. Many scientists regard ELISA as being the most accurate, but unfortunately, many labs don’t have the expesive equipment necessary to perform this test.

Ask a colostrum manufacturer how they test. If it’s the RID method, take the results, “with a pinch of salt”.

Colostrom's Future Impact

Research now underway is expected to yield even more concrete data about the impact colostrum has on our lives. Just a partial list of the ways bovine colostrum can potentially help us achieve and maintain optimum health and slow the aging process includes:

• Rheumatoid Arthritis –because colostrum can reduce inflammation;
• Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis - because colostrum helps to build bone density.
• Transplantation –immunoglobins in colostrum could help reduce infection with fungus and bacteria.
• Cancer Fighters -the cytokines in colostrum include the powerful interleukins.
• Slowing of HIV -colostrum can reduce the infectious pathogens that cause related conditions,
• Reduction in Obesity –colostrum can help the body better utilize the food it eats.
• Effects of Aging — colostrum cream can moisturize and even repair skin (via epithelial growth factor) to help reduce the effects and appearance of aging.

Conclusion
Bovine colostrum is one of nature's greatest miracles. Its nutritional properties alone are of tremendous value to us. The highly beneficial immune and growth factors present in bovine colostrum offer considerable possibilities for the prevention and recovery of illnesses and disease. Colostrum also offers doctors, researchers, and the general population great hope in the quest for treatments that will help reverse the aging process.

Australian Olympic Teams Take Colostrum and Win the Gold!

Extensive clinical research in Australia has sent shockwaves through the athletic world. Two clinical trials in Adelaide with Australian Olympic teams proved that taking colostrum increased strength and stamina by 20%! The amazing results of this research were available to all Australian Olympic athletes and they responded. During the 2000 summer games in Sydney, the Australian teams won twice as many medals per capita than the next closest competitor.

Colostrum was on the minds of everyone involved when the medals started piling up.The research and clinical results are in and the Aussie teams are convinced that colostrum helped them achieve their goals.

Why Colostrum?
Colostrum has decades of medical research supporting its possibilities for healing and anti-aging. Its powerful immune factors and growth hormones may be very beneficial for healing our gastrointestinal tract, where 80-90% of all disease begins. Colostrum has components which target fat for fuel rather than muscle. Research shows it aids in creating healthy cellular replication which could be very beneficial for healing and anti-aging. Colostrum's growth hormones may assist in giving us the mental, hormonal and energy levels we desire. Because colostrum is a natural food and not a plant substance or a compound prepared in a laboratory, it has been shown to be safe at any level. Each person is unique as to the amount that is needed to achieve optimal benefit. Colostrum...life's first food –it shows so much promise as the food for life!
